Modigliani
Doris Krystof
Taschen 2000
Paperback, 230 x 189 mm, 96 pages
£3.99
The early work of Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was
strongly influenced by Fauvism, Cézanne and Toulouse-Lautrec.
He also produced a number of sculptures after which
he returned to portraiture with his wife being his main
model. Modigliani's main aim was to find some abstract,
ideal beauty through his art and, in 1917, his exhibition
of nudes at the gallery Berthe Weill was closed for
"indecency". Famous for his almond-eyed women
with elongated necks and bodies, Modigliani's style
had ancient roots that lay deep in the classical antiquity
of Africa. Krystof provides a highly entertaining and
very readable account of the artist's bohemian lifestyle.

Morocco Modern
Herbert Ypma
Stewart, Tabori & Chang 1996
Paperback, 298 x 233 mm, 160 pages
£7.99
Morocco is a country of extremes: at once ultra-modern,
with its cellular phones and couture fashions, yet still
deeply traditional, with the legacy of the nation's almost
500 years of political and cultural isolation. These twin
tendencies are also the defining qualities in modern Morocco's
decorative arts. Some of the most talented and progressive
architects and designers are working in Morocco today,
their work profoundly influenced by a deep-rooted veneration
for the fine artisan traditions of the past but who reinterpret
these influences to create work that is strikingly modern.
With 171 full-colour photographs, this book will surprise
and stimulate architects and designers everywhere.

Isamu
Noguchi: Space Of Akari & Stone
Isamu Noguchi
Chronicle Books 1988
Paperback, 340 x 257 mm, 103 pages
£12.99
"There is
a difference between actual cubic feet of space and the
additional space that the imagination supplies. One is
measure, the other an awareness of the void - of our existence
in this passing world" Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988).
A
pioneering abstract sculptor also renowned for his public
gardens in Tokyo, Paris, New York, Chicago, Mexico City
and Jerusalem, Noguchi is also acclaimed for his transformations
of traditional Japanese paper and wire lanterns, called
Akari, into delicate, luminous works of art. This book
is an elegant record of the exhibition "Space of
Akari and Stone" where the interplay of these contrasting
art forms can be appreciated in a setting designed by
the great Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, creating a
stunning environment of gardenlike tranquility and modernist
tension.

Oceanic
Art
Anthony J P Meyer
Könemann 1995
Hardback, colour d/w, 255 x 205 mm, 640 pages
£19.99
This
comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book presents
an in-depth study of the art of the three great cultural
areas of Oceania: Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia.
Melanesia, with the expressionistic and extraordinary
art forms of New Guinea, the highly classical art forms
of Polynesia, and the pure form of Micronesia, are now
regarded as major components of the world's artistic heritage.
This
extraordinary book presents Oceanic Art in all its diversity:
masks, jewellery, weapons, canoe prows, overmodelled skulls,
tapa, and major representations of tribal deities. In
addition, it presents the physical and historical situation
of the South Pacific island cultures.
Most
of the works of art illustrated in this volume are stored
deep in the reserves of museums or held in private collections
not accessible to the public. The majority are shown here
for the first time and were photographed specifically
for this book. This is the single-volume version of the
1995 two-volume publication. 741 full colour illustrations.
